2011 SW Florida Yard and Garden Show

It was a rainy weekend, but that didn’t stop many people from coming to do community service. The show must go on was the theme. So thanks for coming to help under such wet conditions.

It was amazing to see the youth volunteer. As many of you know people try to tip the youth at this event. I was so proud of them. They tried to explain that they were doing this for community service and could not take a tip. But people really wanted them to take the money. The neat part was they turned in theirtips. I was so pleased to see their reaction. The money went two places, either to the 4-HFoundation or the Collier County 4-H Livestock Show. It is truly rewarding to give after you havehelped others. I am so proud.

Archery occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month between 3:00 and 5:30. Archery is an outside event. If the weather is bad archery will not occur.

Robotics occurs on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of each month between 3:30 to 5:00.

Mock Marine Ecology Event On October 24, 2011 Three of Florida's finest Sea Grant Agents - Joy Hazell, Betty Staugler and Bryan Fluent hosted the 2nd annual Mock Marine Ecology Event for 4-Hers in our district. We had 37 youth and parents attend. Collier County was represented by Gulf Gator's 4-H Club. The club will be heading to the Florida State marine Ecology Event on December 3 in Orlando.

Mahanaim Farm in Estero/Immokalee has brought in from Ohio, 115 Show Pigs to be sold to 4-H'ers in Lee, Collier, and Henry counties. They are Hampshire, Yorkshire, and Bluebutt crosses. Right now the range in size from 45 lbs to 70 lbs. This is a new Registered Farm. Marlon Rodriguez is selling these Show Pigs for $150 each and well worth it. They are great looking pigs! Well muscled and straight backs. Marlon can be reached at (239) 601-1591 for directions to the farm, which is located just off ST RD 850 - Cockscrew exit off I75 or go through Immokalee to ST RD 82 then turn on 850. He is close enough that if you wanted to just go look first, you can.
This man found out what we were paying for show pigs and was shocked so he made arrangements with a top quality farm in Ohio to bring in Pigs for our children at cheaper prices then the larger hog farms in FL and GA. This Farm in Ohio has produced many Grand Champion Hogs for Ohio, Indiana and other states.

Ends in the Seminole Casino parking lot. WE NEED YOUTH and their small ANIMALS!!! Wear your 4-H shirts. From 1-3 we will have our trailer from the parade parked in the lot. April 2011 – 4-H Educational Note from Tish (New 4-H Agent, She comes from Nebraska!) What is Arbor Day??? – April 29, 2011 Arbor Day is an annual observation that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. As a formal holiday, it was first observed in 1872, in Nebraska, but tree planting festivals are as old as civilization. The tree has appeared throughout history and literature as the symbol of life. J. Sterling Morton and the First Arbor Day The idea for Arbor Day in the United States originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Among the pioneers moving into the Nebraska Territory in 1854 was Julius Sterling Morton from Detroit. He and his wife, Caroline, were lovers of nature, and the home they established in Nebraska was quickly planted with trees, shrubs and flowers. Morton was a journalist and soon became editor of Nebraska’s first newspaper. Given that forum, he spread agricultural information and his enthusiasm for trees to a receptive audience. His fellow pioneers missed their trees and needed them for windbreaks, fuel, building materials, and shade from the hot prairie sun. A visit to Nebraska today wouldn’t disclose the state was once a treeless plain, yet it was the lack of trees there that led to the founding of Arbor Day in 1800’s. Morton wrote and spoke about environmental stewardship and the interrelatedness of life. He encouraged everyone to set aside a specific day to plant trees. In 1872, the State Board of Agriculture accepted a resolution by J. Sterling Morton “to set aside one day to plant trees, both forest and fruit.” The Board declared April 10, Arbor Day and offered prizes to the counties and individuals that properly planted the largest number of trees on that day. More than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. With this first tree planting holiday observance, J. Sterling Morton became known as the “Founder of Arbor Day.” The Spread of a Good Idea Shortly after this 1872 observance, other states passed legislation to observe Arbor Day each year with appropriate ceremonies. By 1920, more than 45 states and territorial possessions were celebrating Arbor Day. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated in all fifty states. Throughout the world, people of all ages are planting trees, caring for them, and learning their value. · In the United States, this tree planning festival is called Arbor Day. · In Israel, it is called the New Year’s Day of the Trees. · Korea has a Tree-Loving Week · Iceland has a Student’s Afforestation Day. · Yugoslavia holds an Arbor Day in the spring and an Afforestation Day in the fall. · India celebrates a National Festival of Tree Planting Most holidays celebrate something that has already happened and is worth remembering like the day someone was born or a religious holiday celebrating a past event. Arbor Day reflects a hope for the future. The trees planted on Arbor Day show a concern for future generations. The simple act of planting a tree represents a belief that the tree will grow and, some day, provide wood products, wildlife habitat, erosion control, shelter from the wind and sun, beauty, and inspiration for ourselves and our children. When Is Arbor Day? For many years, Arbor Day was celebrated on April 22, J. Sterling Morton’s birthday. Today, National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April. All fifty states, Puerto Rico, and some U.S. territories have passed legislation adopting Arbor Day which is celebrated on a date appropriate for tree planting in their region. WE WANT TO KNOW AND WE’RE ALL EARS! This effort will allow us to have a clear path of action as an educational organization that is relevant and flexible to meet the changing needs of collier’s communities. We are here to support Collier's economy, environment, and people. It has been several years since we had a comprehensive long range planning effort and much has changed in Collier and in Florida. When we consider our budget situation, advancements in technology and emerging issues, it is critical we reexamine our programmatic priorities and teaching strategies. Listening will be at the core of Extension's long range planning effort. Extension seeks to acquire diverse viewpoints regarding the future of our programming through listening sessions, interviews, focus groups and surveys, with community leaders, local government, business, industry/trade associations, state agencies, health care providers, educators, citizens, etc. In other words- everyone! After the session, the University Extension Staff will formulate a county plan that reflects the educational priorities and future directions identified during the listening process. Implementation of the plan will begin with county faculty providing leadership to identify appropriate teaching approaches, educational content/materials, and outcome/impact measures for the organization. Hello to the 4-H Families, I would like to introduce myself. I am Tish Roland, the new 4-H Extension Agent for Collier County. I started work on March 7. Just in time for the horse show in Immokalee. I have been super busy learning about 4-H in Florida. I really enjoyed the County Fair last week. What a busy time for all of the 4-H families. I come from Nebraska. I grew up in western Nebraska in a town called Ogallala (population 5,000). I showed my horse in 4-H. Actually, I tried to find any reason to be on a horse. My senior year of High School I went to New Zealand for a year as a Rotary Exchange Student. Upon my return I went to the University of Nebraska for 4 years and got a Bachelors of Education in Elementary Education and Human Development and the Family. I married my husband Mark after graduation. His career in the Air Force moved us to California, where our first son, Douglas was born. Then we moved to Montana, where our second son, Daniel was born. During this time I taught in Great Falls and Power, Montana. We decided that Nebraska was the place to raise our boys so we returned back home. We lived in Eagle on an acreage, which is just outside of Lincoln. I had two horses Jessie and Mac. I worked at the University of Nebraska for the last 17 years as the Director of the Children’s Center. It was a very large center serving 178 children. The children were from 25 different counties. I had 22 full time employees and 70 college students. My sons are both are attending the University of Nebraska. I look forward to working with all of you. I will be calling each leader and asking when your next meeting is, so that I can come and meet all of you. You are always welcome to contact me. Communication is very important to establish a relationship. I am here for you and want to do what is best for your club. In the beginning I may not know all the answers, but I will find the answers and get back to you. I know many of you have had a long journey in 4-H and I would love to hear from you. On February 12th, 4-H members from Hoof Beats and Boots & Spurs in Collier Country went the the State Fair in Tampa to compete in the 2011 Horse Judging competition. Over 300 individuals 4H and FFA club members from all over the state can to Tampa for this competition. The day included judging 4 halter classes and 4 under saddle classes. The teams from Collier county had a great experience and finished in the top half. Clare Sullivan finished in the top 10. Congratulations to all the participants ( Sierra Tamm, Devon Roffler, Clare Sullivan, Bree Wipperman, Danielle Fisher, Sarah Sistrunk, Annabelle Moll) On March 19th, some of these same 4-Hers travelled to Orlando to compete in the 2011 Hippology contest. This is a day of team activities, written tests, horse judging and visual station identification on all topics related to horses. Sarah Sistrunk finished 5th overall in the Intermediate division, Devon Roffler received the highest school on the team question in the Senior Division and Clare Sullivan received the highest score in the Senior Division for Horse Judging and finished 4th overall. Congratulations to the teams and thank you for representing Collier County!

I would like to congratulate all of the exhibitors at the 4-H Livestock show. Everyone did a great job with their animals, and all of the inside entries were great.
Congratulations to the Hoof beats 4-H club on winning best of show on their club wreath. Everyone had a lot of fun on the Family fun day, with the races and egg toss game (even though it became a little messy.)

I would also like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the 4-H Livestock Show a great success.

Paper work for County events and KYCG are completed. Make sure to ask your leader for the forms if you are interested in participating, and return them to the Extension office before the deadline.

I'm sorry that it has been so long since we updated the blog, between travel and the holidays I have fallen behind.

It is time for the 4-H Livestock show!!!
Come out and support the youth that will be showing their animals on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Don't forget 4-H day games on Sunday. Also on Sunday will be the Club Chili cook off, if you have a great chili recipe come join the contest.

County Events will take place on March 5th, paperwork will be available next week.

The dead line to sign up for Know Your County Government is on February 5th, if you need paperwork or more information please let Trisha or Marie know.

The Area F qualifying horse show will be held on March 12th. The location and time will be announced.

4-H Day at the Capitol has been changed to April 27th, 2011.

Intermediate State (Leadership Adventure Weekend) is a weekend-long event for 11-13 year-old Intermediate 4-H'ers from across Florida to participate in fun leadership workshops and other activities. This year’s event is going to be held at Camp Ocala from February 18-20, 2011 and our theme is “Health Rocks”. We have a great group of Senior 4-H'ers (aged 14-18) planning this event and teach the workshops and activities, including mock legislature and Health Rocks fun activities, informing youth of the numerous benefits to serving and leading in 4-H. Come join us on Saturday December the 11th for the Christmas parade. we must be in line by 4:30 so the deputies can close the roads. We will be there around 3:00 building the float if you would like to help. After the parade at the Immokalee Aquatic Sports Complex the 4-H Livestock committee will be having a cake walk, if you would like to help by making cakes or pies for this event please let us know.

Also on Saturday the 11th we will be having a rabbit workshop, if you are showing rabbits in the Fair or the Livestock show this will be a good workshop to attend. If you need your rabbit tattooed we can do it that day also. The workshop will be held at the Extension office and we will start at 9:00 am

5. The Florida State Fair will provide a 10 x 15 space in the Florida Center to decorate.
6. Entries will be judged on eye appeal, construction, use of materials, and creativity.
7. Exhibits may be decorated February 5th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Entries will be judged Thursday, February
10, 2011. The exhibits should be decorated with a good clean wholesome nature. No vulgar or
suggestive decorations will be allowed. Showcase your Club/Chapter, your county, your

Scarecrow Contest
The 4-H Collier County Livestock show is having a scarecrow contest and would like to invite all 4-H clubs to participate, you can bring your scarecrow to the leaders meeting on the 21st, or drop them off on the 18th between 6:30-8:00 p.m. The scarecrows will be displayed at the Fall Festival and the Yard and Garden show.

Fall Festival
The Fall Festival and Community yard sale will be held on October 23 from 9:00a.m.-3:00 p.m.
at the Roberts Ranch Museum in Immokalee. There will be food, games, hay rides, cake walks, bake sale, pumpkins and much more. You can rent a yard sale space for $10.00 and sell some of the things that you would like to get rid of and make yourself some extra money. For more information or to rent a space call 239-280-8378.

Shooting Sports Training
If you would like to go to the shooting sports training to get certified to teach a discipline in your club or help us in our shooting sports club we need to know by Tuesday, October the 19th so we can get the registration in. The shooting sports training will be November the 12th-14th at Camp Cloverleaf. It will start at 6:00 p.m on the 12th and end at 1:30 p.m. on the 14th.

Turkey Shoot
October 30th from 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Behind the Corkscrew Baptist Church at 22022 Immokalee Road. Bring your own bows and arrows, if you don't have a bow and would like to participate we will have one that you can use. The cost is $5.oo , each round purchased will enter a prize drawing. Gross Walk
The CCF Junior Fair board presents "The Gross Walk" A Haunted Walk to to benefit Cheryl Gross, a CCF board member with stage 4 melanoma. The Gross walk will be held on October the 27th - 31st. Tickets are 1 for $5.oo or 5 for $20.00. There will be a haunted walk, games, crafts, a hay ride. There will be a trunk or treat and costume contest Halloween night, and a pumpkin patch October the 23-31st.

Yard and Garden Show
The Yard and garden show is on October the 30th and 31st, we need 4-H youth to come and help carry plants to the cars, we will also have a 4-H tent set up where we will be selling fresh produce. If you are planning on helping with this event call us and sign up so we can make sure that all time spots are filled.

Block and Bridle Beef Show Clinic
Saturday, November 20th, from 9:00am-4:00pm. An excellent opportunity for exhibitors from the ages of 8-16 to learn the basics of showing beef cattle in a hands on clinic. If you have youth interested in attending this clinic contact Trisha or Marie for more information.

Shooting Sports: First meeting will be held on Tuesday September 7th from 4:30 -5:30. We will be starting with archery and range safety.

Land Judging: The first meeting will be on Tuesday September 7th from 5:30-6:30. You will learn how to tell the difference between soils, learn the slope of the land, and be able to tell where the water table is.

Horticulture Judging/ 4-H Vegetable Garden Project: The first meeting will be Tuesday, September 14th from 4:30-5:30. In the horticulture Judging you will learn to identify plants by their leaves and classify the quality of the plants. For the garden project you will plant your own garden, and enter a contest with the produce grown and your garden.

Livestock Judging: The first meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 14th from 5:30-6:30. In the livestock judging you will be learning to judge the value and quality of livestock.

The first leaders meeting will be on August 19th at 6:30 pm, we will give out the leaders packets, please make sure that a leader from every club attends.

Weigh-in will be from 8:00 am until 10:00 am, the minimum weight is 550lbs entry forms will be available at the weigh-in but you must bring your bill of sail. I’m proud to share that 4-H’s premier summer national conference, Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), finished its final week at the 4-H National Youth Conference Center here in our nation’s capital just a few weeks ago. Nearly 1500 young people from 28 states traveled to the Center to experience the living classroom of Washington, DC. While participating in CWF, 4-H'ers improve their understanding of their civic and social responsibilities in order to become better citizens and leaders and exchanged ideas, practiced respect, and formed friendships with other 4-H youth from across the country!
At the end of each week, 4-H’ers reflected on what they learned while in Washington, DC and how this week had changed them. I wanted to take a moment to share that impact with you here:
“I've entered another realm of 4-H and discovered a higher meaning of it. This trip will stick with me forever.”
“I have a greater appreciation for the diversity of our country.”
“This program has helped me realize that it’s ok to voice your opinion even if it’s different from others.”

"CWF has been the highlight of my 4-H Career.”
“It made me realize that being a good leader is so much more than just being a good person.”
“I didn't have the faintest idea what a good citizen was before I came here, and now I know it's what I strive to be.”

Two Recent Cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Confirmed

According to a press release issued by the Polk County Health Department, two horses have recently died and tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a mosquito-borne disease. “The horses were found in the rural outskirts of Lake Wales and Frostproof in southeast Polk County. No human cases of mosquito borne illnesses have been reported in Polk County this year. However, the risk of transmission to humans is possible. This virus can cause mild to severe symptoms in humans including a serious brain infection.”

Horses can be vaccinated for the disease, however a vaccine is not yet available for humans. Residents are urged to follow certain precautions to avoid exposure to mosquitoes.

The Health Department suggests the following steps:

· Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn.

· Wear clothing that covers skin.

· Use repellents that contain up to 30 percent DEET.

· Rid your home and property of standing water.

· Repair torn screens.

In horses, EEE is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Signs of the virus include fever, listlessness, stumbling, circling, coma and usually death. The disease is fatal in horses in 90% of the cases.

A majority of cases can be prevented through proper vaccinations and booster shots against mosquito borne illnesses. Horse owners should take action now to prevent transmission of the disease.

The health department reminds residents and visitors to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes that may cause encephalitis disease. Polk County Mosquito Control and the health department continue surveillance and prevention efforts and encourage everyone to take basic precautions to help limit exposure.

To protect yourself from mosquitoes, you should remember to practice the “5 D’s” and “1 S”:

Dusk and Dawn – Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are seeking blood.
Dress – Wear clothing that covers most of your skin.
DEET – When the potential exists for exposure to mosquitoes, repellents containing up to 30 percent DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) are recommended.
Drainage – Check around your home to rid the area of standing water, where mosquitoes lay eggs.
Screens – Repair any torn screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home.

Other effective repellants are picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535. Always read label directions carefully for the approved usage before you apply a repellent. Some repellents are not suitable for children.

Tips on Eliminating Mosquito Breeding Sites
Elimination of breeding sites is one of the keys to prevention.

Clean out eaves, troughs and gutters.
Remove old tires or drill holes in those used in playgrounds to drain.
Turn over or remove empty plastic pots.
Pick up all beverage containers and cups.
Check tarps on boats or other equipment that may collect water.
Pump out bilges on boats.
Replace water in birdbaths and pet or other animal feeding dishes at least once a week.
Change water in plant trays, including hanging plants, at least once a week.
Remove vegetation or obstructions in drainage ditches that prevent the flow of water.
Horse owners should contact their veterinarian for information on vaccination of horses against mosquito borne diseases. For more information on mosquito-borne illnesses, visit the Department of Health’s Environmental Health Web site at www.doh.state.fl.us/Environment/medicine/arboviral/index.html, or call the Disease Outbreak Hotline at 1-888-880-5782.

4-H Involvement

Summer is a time for fun – but it is also the time when many youth lose what they learned during the school year and pick up unhealthy eating habits. The United We Serve Let’s Read. Let’s Move. initiative was just launched to help solve these challenges – watch this video of First Lady Michelle Obama launching Let’s Read. Let’s Move. at a service event with members of Congress.

America’s youth are our nation’s greatest assets, and ensuring that they are on the path to success will require the work of all of us. United We Serve’s Let’s Read. Let’s Move. initiative needs your help. This is why 4-H is joining in the effort with United We Serve to fight childhood obesity and summer learning loss. Recognized as a leader in positive youth development and community building, 4-H is being asked to participate in this summer’s United We Serve activities.

4-H National Headquarters asks two things of 4-H programs. First, post related success stories at serve.gov/share. These stories will serve as a catalyst for other groups to get involved. Second, we ask that you promote some simple strategies to engage in this intiative through your communications channels.

These strategies will be distributed to mission mandate contacts in your state. Examples include:

· Identify local community gardens

o Volunteer to deliver produce

o Help at a farmer’s market

o Help to maintain the gardens

o Assist in harvest

· Gleaning of Produce

o Find a local organization that can use produce to serve those in need

Exhange Opportunity

I work for a non-profit Exchange Student organization that brings kids from France to SWFL for a 20 day stay during the month of July. Our company is proud to be able to match their students interests with the families we place them.

This year we have a girl that is very into Landscaping. She is actually thinking on pursuing this as a career

I would like to ask your help in checking with your contacts if someone might be interested in hosting her. The host family just needs to provide a warm welcome, a bed and board. She will be staying here from July 12th thru July 31st. The students come fully insured and with pocket money to spend.

My company provides busing from and to the airport. The rest is up to the family to decide. It is certainly a good opportunity for a family! Last year we had 12 kids in the area and in 2010 we will have the same amount of kids, but mostly girls (which I am also looking for families to host).

I can certainly provide more information and even flyer if you allow me to.

Thanks very much in advance, it is very hard to reach to families and people in the area to know about the program, so any help is appreciated.

Junior Fitness Challenge In June!!

1st Tri Training this Saturday at 9:30am! See website below for more information.

4-H will host the 4th Annual Junior Fitness Challenge, a mini-triathlon for children 7 -13 years of age. This festive fitness event is aimed at encouraging youth and families to exercise for the "fun" of it! The Junior Fitness Challenge was purposely scheduled for the day before the Naples Fitness Challenge which is a local triathlon for adults. Parents serve as role models for their children's fitness habits. A family who exercises and plays together is a healthier family!

Who: Youth ages 7-13

What: Junior Triathlon (run, bike, and swim).

Where: North Collier Regional Park (15000 Livingston Road Dr. Naples, Fl)

When: June 5, 2010 (day before Naples Fitness Adult Challenge)

Why: The objective is to teach youth about the importance of leading healthy lifestyles by encouraging participation in fun and creative activities and increase resources available for youth through community partnerships.

One by One Leadership will be hosting Kids Games on May 22, 2010. Kids Games is an exciting Sports, faith based and values centered event involving Churches, Businesses and Community groups throughout the World. Hundres of youth in S.W. Florida will participate in soccer, basketball, flag football, and track and field events as well as fun games like tug of war, water bucket relays and a greal deal more.

Kids Games will include dance, drama, music, and a compassion project to be held friday evening, that will help others in the community.

There are 4 ways to get involved. One can participate, volunteer, become a sponsor, or provide A scholarship.

Pigs and Chics

Hello,

My name is Ginger Willis and I have a question in regards to 4-H showing. I was told that kids can now show their guina pigs in 4-H.

The reason I am asking is that my daughter has three very pretty piggies that we are in need of finding homes for. Two are long haired and one is a smooth
guina pig. One of the long haired ones is the mother, and the other two are babies. The mother is just one year old, and the babies are only 6 months old.

I am willing to donate these little piggies, cage and all.

If you have anyone who is interested, please feel free to e-mail me. And for the most part, I want them to have a good home, wether they get show or not.

4-H Youth Awards Banquet
Dear 4H Families:

Please join us on May 20, 2010 as we recognize our outstanding 4H-ers at the 4H Awards Evening. This year’s event will be at Collier County University Extension office, and begins at 7:00 pm sharp.

All 4H families are invited, and many awards will be presented. All children who turned in record books will be recognized, as will 5-7 year olds designated as completing the year successfully. The evening will include a frozen yogurt & toppings dessert and an awards program!

There is no cost, and you don’t need to bring anything, but you MUST RSVP so that we know how many people to plan for. In the interest of time and a smoothly run program, we do not call names of people who are not present. If someone comes who failed to RSVP, we will not have their award available.

The deadline is Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Please call Peggy or Linda to RSVP all we need is the name of the participating 4-H’er and the total number of people in his or her party.

UF/IFAS Entomology Field Camp
June 21 – 15, 2010

The UF/IFAS Entomology and Nematology Department will be holding its first annual Entomology Field Camp from June 21-25, 2010. Camp is open to 6th-8th graders interested in science. For five days, attendees will participate in numerous entomological laboratory and field investigations, and have close interaction with Entomology and Nematology faculty and students. 4-H National Youth Science Day will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2010

The 2010 National Science Experiment, 4-H2O, will focus on water quality and climate change. Using a three-tiered experiment model, the experiment engages youth of all ages to learn at the simplest level how carbon dioxide can affect aquatic animals, plants and other living organisms in lakes, streams, rivers and oceans. Facilitators will lead discussions to help youth better understand climate change. The experiment will help youth connect back to their lives by measuring their own carbon footprint, their family's footprint, and estimate energy savings by looking at gas and electric bills. The Wild Clovers 4-H Club just completed their wildlife program by raising money for the Pennies for the Planet Program with an emphasis on donating to the National Panther Refugee in Collier County. We raised approximately $40 in pennies! We had Marc Criffield from Florida Fish and Wildlife come and speak to us about not only protecting the panthers but how we can coexist with panthers, bobcats and bears at the same time protecting our livestock. He also spoke about different employment opportunities through FWC.

Our program continued by taking a field trip to Animal Kingdom in Orlando. We learned more about backyard habitats and how to share our world with the animals. Relative to our outdoor cooking project this year, we learned that if we use a small amount of wood, balanced on 4 rocks we can use the rocks as heating elements or you can use a use mud to make a pottery base and use it as a heating element. The kids are excited to try this at home! We spoke with three (3) veterinarian assistants at Animal Kingdom listening to in-depth lectures and looking at the care of the animals through veterinary care, nutrition and research. Most think of Animal Kingdom as just another theme park when in actually it is also a research center and habitat for endangered species such as the Tamarin monkey.

Wild Clovers 4-H Club is looking forward to next year and learning more about the habitat, health and care of not only their livestock projects but wildlife. Until next year!

Andrew Whisman is an 11 year old local boy who is in desperate need of AB positive blood. Andrew has contracted an E-Coli bacterium and his organs are being viciously attacked. He has been hospitalized at NCH downtown since Thursday, March 25th. The bacteria has got into his blood stream and his kidneys and pancreas have been shutting down. Andrew undergoes dialysis daily to clean out the bacteria, but is in desperate need of blood transfusions. Needless to say, he also has a rare type of blood AB+. There is a shortage of this blood type in Florida and they have to fly AB+ blood in from other states. Currently there are 3 other patients in the state with similar needs. .<>We are asking that anyone with AB positive blood to consider making arrangements to give blood immediately to save this little boy. By the way, his uncle is the Golf Course Superintendent at Hammock Bay. Today may be your day to help save a life. Thank you for your consideration.

Sam Poole asked us to post this on our blog. He has a Black Angus Cross steer out of Patty O’Malley. The steer comes from John Callaway’s ranch out of Georgia, it was born mid September it weighs 500-550 lbs. and is eating well. He is asking $1000.00 for it, if you are interested call Sam Poole at 239-707-3507 or email him at sep941@aol.com .

If you are interested in the 4-H Urban Farming project there is still time to participate. In the Urban farming project you will till an 8x12 piece of land, make rows, plant the seeds that we provide, and care for your garden. Your garden will be judged, and the vegetables will also be judged, if you have any questions or if you are interested in doing this project you can contact Marie or Trisha.

Florida 4-H Dog Project Scholarship
$1,000.00 Scholarship to be awarded to an eligible applicant at the July 2010 4-H Congress.

The recipient will be selected by the Florida 4-H Youth Development Scholarship Committee in cooperation with the Florida 4-H Dog Project Scholarship Committee according to all established criteria and procedures. Awards will be announced during the 4-H Congress in Gainesville.

Know Your County Government

Congrats to 4-H Know Your County Government Particpants!

Know Your County Government is a program under the leadership of Collier County University Extension/4-H Youth Development, Collier County League of Women Voters, and Collier County Public Schools Social Studies Departments.
The 30th Annual Know Your County Government Teen Citizenship Program began on March 2nd and ran through March 23rd, culminating with lunch with the county commissioners. This program teaches high school students the purpose and function of county government, how it operates, and what career opportunities it offers.

This year thirty-four students from Barron Collier, Naples, Gulf Coast, Golden Gate, Palmetto Ridge and Corkscrew Christian School participated. The group met all of the constitutional officers and many county officials as they visited a sampling of county departments and facilities. In two full days of field trips and four evenings the group visited the landfill, water treatment plant, waste water plant, county museum, Domestic Animal Services, the courthouse, health department, Transportation, University Extension, Emergency Services, and more.
The teens also completed and turned in a 4-H Citizenship Record Book that includes journal questions. They also each receive a comprehensive resource book, Make Government Your Business, written and updated annually by the Collier County League of Women Voters.

All who complete the program successfully receive scholarships from the Collier County 4-H Club Foundation, Inc. to attend Florida 4-H Legislature in Tallahassee. 4-H Legislature provides hands-on experience in state government. Teens are lobbyists or legislators, work on committees, and study issues before going to Tallahassee to participate in a mock legislature.

Just a reminder that Forest Ecology registration should be postmarked by tomorrow(March 26) to avoid late fees. We will accept them in the office until Friday (April 2), but there will be a late fee of $30, plus they will need to be sent priority or FedEx.

Marcela Rice from the U.S. Department of Commerce and Census Bureau has an exciting opportunity for 4-Hers to gain volunteer hours and a service experience for their record books. The event is called MARCH TO THE MAILBOX and will be held on Saturday, April 10th nationwide. The goal is to encourage families in the North Naples/Bonita Area There to fill out their census or seek help filling it out at a center nearby. This could range from handing out flyers to having a mini-parade…it is up to you to be creative as you would like. Materials such as t-shirts, flyers, air horns, hats and banners will be provided so please contact Marcela ASAP if you are interested with an address where these materials can be sent. Marcela will also be attending County Events if you have further questions. Thank you!

4-H Day at the Capitol Registration,
Below you will find link for registration for 4-H Day at the Capitol. This e-mail is on the long side, yes, but it really does contain valuable information, so I encourage you to read it – all. I know that everyone is excited to get registered, and I want to remind you that registration is limited for certain tours and for the available buses, this means that they will be first registered, first picked. The choice will be removed from selection online when they are no longer available.
Facts you should read before you begin:
· Registration will be open from now until April 2.
· The registration page is not password protected, so if you feel comfortable sending it to a few select volunteers to help you register youth in your county, it may be done at your discretion.
· One the registration page there will be an e-mail box, a confirmation of registration will be sent to that e-mail address. You may want to use it differently if you do not want to send the participant the confirmation e-mail, you can always put in your e-mail. If volunteers are registering others they may want to submit the confirmation page with payment to county office.
· The confirmation page should be retained, as it contains final tour, lunch, bus, and t-shirt size.
· Counties will receive a copy of all registered participants on April 7 or when requested if before then (please expect a one day business wait).
· Participation/Health forms must travel with youth when outside of counties, but do not need to be submitted for registration.

Payment:
On the hard copy of the registration form, it asks that payment be turned in with registration form. I highly suggest that you follow this, because we will NOT accept multiple checks from individuals. Please combine payments at the county level and send one county check. Payments can be sent directly to the State Events Office. Payments are due April 22, but please contact us if an extension is needed.

I just want to share with all of you that adopt, volunteer, foster and support Brooke's Legacy animal rescue. In 14 days with everyone's help we have adopted 22 rescued pet's into their forever homes!! In January 46 pet's found their forever home's, in Febuary 31 pet's found their forever homes. This could not be done without EVERYONE'S help.

A five-member team of high school students from Sanford, Florida won the State LifeSmarts Championship this week held at the Florida State Fair in Tampa. LifeSmarts is an educational program that develops the consumer and marketplace skills of teenagers in a fun way and rewards them for this knowledge.

With half of the world’s population now living in cities, many urban dwellers have never experienced the wonderment of pristinely dark skies and maybe never will. This loss, caused by light pollution, is a concern on many fronts: safety, energy conservation, cost, health and effects on wildlife, as well as our ability to view the stars. Even though light pollution is a serious and growing global concern, it is one of the easiest environmental problems you can address on local levels.
Globe at Night is an annual 2-week campaign in March that helps to address the light pollution issue locally as well as globally. This year the campaign is March 3-16, 2010. You are invited along with everyone all over the world to record the brightness of your night sky by matching its appearance toward the constellation Orion with star maps of progressively fainter stars found at http://www.globeatnight.org/observe_magnitude.html. You then submit your measurements on-line at http://www.globeatnight.org/report.html with your date, time and location. A few weeks later, organizers release a map of light-pollution levels worldwide. Over the last four 2-week Globe at Night campaigns, volunteers from over 100 nations have contributed 35,000 measurements.

As many of you may have seen on the Florida 4-H Homepage, there is now a Web page for this year’s 4-H Day at the Capitol. We are all getting excited about our trip to Tallahassee, and we hope that you will be able to join us. On the Web page you will find tour information, maps, registration forms and some other goodies!

Things to know:
1. Do not mail registration forms to the State Office, they will not be accepted.
2. Registration will be online and will open April 8th. à Counties will be able to control who has access to the registration Web site. We will send out the link, but it will be up to you to decide who gets it from there.
3. All payments need to be processed at the county level. We will ask that each county send one county check.
4. Registration will close April 2nd; after this a list of all from your county that are registered will be sent to you. You will also be sent a bill for those people. (The registration form states that they should submit payment when they turn in their registration forms.)
5. We will send out more details on registration next Monday with the Web address.
6. If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to call or e-mail the State Events Office.
